Kangasalla sijaitseva Sarsan alue oli monin tavoin suotuisa esihistorialliseksi asuinpaikaksi. Sarsa sijoittuu Salpaussel\u00e4lt\u00e4 l\u00e4htev\u00e4n Kosken \u2013 Tampereen \u2013 H\u00e4meenkankaan saumamuodostuman (harjujakson) ja J\u00e4rvi- Suomen l\u00e4ntisen osan suurj\u00e4rvien risteyskohtaan. Harjujakson it\u00e4puolella on L\u00e4ngelm\u00e4vesi ja l\u00e4nsipuolella Roine. Ne olivat aluksi yhteydess\u00e4 harjujakson matalassa notkelmassa. My\u00f6hemmin, kun Mallasvesi \u2013 Roineen vedenpinta laski sen alettua maankohoamisen seurauksena laskea Valkeakosken Apiankosken kautta, syntyi Sarsanvirta. Vedet olivat eritt\u00e4in merkitt\u00e4vi\u00e4 kalastuksen kannalta, ja niit\u00e4 pitkin p\u00e4\u00e4si siirtym\u00e4\u00e4n et\u00e4isille er\u00e4maa-alueille. Harjujakso tarjosi hyv\u00e4t kulkuyhteydet ja oli t\u00e4rke\u00e4 riistael\u00e4inten kulkureittin\u00e4. Merik\u00e4\u00e4n ei ollut kovin kaukana.
